Each year, Canada accepts around 35 million temporary residents (non-immigrants).
All visitors must obtain permission to enter Canada, with the exception of Canadian citizens and permanent residents.

Citizens of visa-exempt countries who want to travel to Canada by air are required to apply for and get an electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) prior to their arrival.
Citizens of the United States, who do not require a TRV or an electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), and Green Card holders in the United States, who require an eTA regardless of nationality, are exceptions to this rule.
Individuals who need a TRV do not need an eTA unless they are exempt.

The TRV is a certificate issued by a Canadian Immigration Visa Office outside of Canada that certifies that the holder meets the criteria for visitor entrance to Canada.
TRVs can be used for single or many entries. Tourists are usually only allowed to stay for six months at a time. International students and temporary foreign employees are admitted for varied durations of time, as assessed on a case-by-case basis. Extensions may be applied for from within Canada.
